Merits Your character can take merits, or strengths, along with their flaws. They can have as many as you want but for every strength you must have a weakness to keep things in balance. Remember that if your character is not human that their supernatural abilities are all ready a great strength. Your character may gain new strengths through out the course of the game, but also must gain a weakness. Below is a list of merits to get you started. You do not have to take merits from the list. You are more than welcome to come up with your own.
Physical Merits
Ambidextrous - While the traditional meaning is that the individual has the ability of both right and left hands, it could also mean an overall versatility. But, really, it's about being both a righty and a lefty at once.
Double-Jointed - The character's joints are not single-jointed, but, yes: double-jointed. It's hard to get any more in-depth than that. This ties to flexibility in a physical manifestation.
Eidetic Memory - Otherwise known as a photographic memory. It only takes one glance over for the character to memorize a scene or information. It's hardly about application of the knowledge, but the face-value of being able to recall with precision numbers, phrases, words, etc.
Heighted Sense- You are more in touch with one of your senses. You might have bat like hearing or great eyesight. Or you can pick up on slight smells.
High Pain Tolerance- Your character can stand pain pretty well. They still feel it of course, but they push through it and keep going anyway.
Perfect Balance - As opposed to imperfect balance! Stays on his or her feet. Doesn't often trip.
Psychological Merits
Common Sense - Is a sort of commonsensical thing in it description: street smarts, the ability to see the consequences of actions, and to make decisions that follow logic.
Concentration - Excellent focus when it comes to all aspects of daily life. The character can sit down and spare the patience in their work, unbroken in train of thought.
Iron Will - Just doesn't know how to quit. The character will persevere relentlessly until he or she is no longer able to see his or her goal to its finish for mentally or physically limitations, or he or she did accomplish what he or she needed to. At this time we are not accepting anymore characters that have this merit
Self-Confidant - These characters know what they want and they know how to do, and by God, they're going to do it. Hardly a lapse into worrying they'll mess up. They're certain they have everything 100% under control.
Social Merits
Black Market Ties - A character possessing this merit has a connection or access to services not generally available under legal terms. It's being able to trade for or purchase some sort of commodity through the Black Market. The character may have contacts or be directly in the trading circle.
Corporate Ties - Less seedy than Black Market Ties -- and much less illegal -- corporate ties link a character to commodities or job positions or special services as can be provided by the corporation in question.
Dependable- Everyone can count on you. No matter what or when, you drop everything to be there and help out. You’re the best at keeping secrets and at handing on to things.
Entertainment Ties - Maybe the character's uncle is Bob Barker -- or, well, maybe they know someone in the showbiz. Always great for a little publicity here and there if the right hook-ups exist. Otherwise, it's an excellent bragging point. "You saw Brad Pitt once? Yeah, well, my old cleaning lady used to work with some other woman that cleaned his laundry." You get the point.
Judicial Ties - A hook-up with the Law. The character most likely has an in with a judge or lawyer. Always good to have when planning a bogus lawsuit against McDonald's.
Reputation - Saved Mrs. Annoying Neighbor's pet cat Foofy? The local nursing home's favorite volunteer? People know your character and for all the right reasons. Many could vouch for something positive about your character.
Unassuming- There's a look or air about you that makes people think that you could never do anything wrong.
Other Merits
Angel/Demon Sense- An angel with this merit can tell if someone is a demon or has demon blood, as would a demon with this would sense an angel.
Animal Affinity - Noah reincarnated? Maybe not, but individuals possessing this trait share a natural connection with animals. Theirs is a mutual relationship with other creatures.
Animal Magnetism - Could be related to animal affinity, but not always so. Individuals with animal magnetism might find the attention they receive by animals isn't always the welcome, friendly sort.
Danger Sense - A form of precognition, danger senses alert the character of looming doom and all that nasty stuff before it hits. It's almost a sixth sense, in a way. For example, should the character be moseying along and an assailant lies in wait just round a corner, the danger sense will sound its alarm. While it can't specifically say "There's an axe-wielding madman two steps ahead, around the corner", it can act a generalized buzzer to caution the character that something will happen. At this time we are not accepting anymore characters that have this merit
Fast Learner - It only takes once, maybe twice for the character to grasp a task, theory, method, or activity. A related trait is cognitive intelligence. It's not simply absorbing information and churning it back out, but taking that information and processing it so that it can be applied to various situations. Characters possessing fast learning grasp the gooey innards of the teachings -- it's not just accurate repetition.
Foul Taste- Vampires and other blood hungry creatures won't have to snack on you cause your blood don't taste so well.
Jack-of-all-Trades - Otherwise known as a Renaissance man or woman. While the character might not be incredibly well-versed in any one field (occupationally, scholastically, etc.), they are decent in many. Simply put: they're good at more than one thing.
Lightning Calculator - What's half of 12 times 9 plus 10? 25. And your character knows that in a heartbeat, being very good with numbers and fast with algebra.
Luck - Maybe winning the lottery isn't in the cards, but life is generally easy-going and full of small miracles for characters possessing luck.
Mechanical Aptitude - A tinkerer, in other words. One that can take apart a device, fix it, and put it back together without any causalities. These characters have a working knowledge of the function and composition of machines.
