Witches and Magic Users
Not as powerful as faerie magic but much more common is arcane magic. Just about anyone can do arcane magic if they put their mind to it. Some have a natural talent for it and some are born to use magic. There are several types of witch magic and most come with a price for using it.
The rule of three applies to all magic used. Anything you do will come back on you threefold. Some magics leave a black mark on the soul. The darker the magic the more smut you end up with on your soul and aura.

The two basic types are white magic and black magic. White magic involves spells that protect and heal. Black magic involves spells that alter nature and could harm a person if used that way. While white magic doesn't come with a price, black magic does. It's addicting and the more one a person uses it the more addicted they become.

Other types of arcane magic are usually seen as darker and practitioners are normally not called witches. Voodoo and Necromancy are two of these. Voodoo is tied to the religion and can only be done if one actually believes in the religion. Necromancy usually involves sacrifice of some type.

Demon magic is a type of magic that leaves the most smut on the soul. It involves twisting curses and summoning demons to do ones binding or to make deals. Practitioners of demon magic don't tend to leave long. Sooner or later they get cocky and summon a demon that they can't handle.

Ley Lines are invisible lines that run through the earth and are pure magic in raw form. Some witches are able to tap into these lines and use it to strengthen their spells. Some can use familiars to store this magic and use it when needed. Where the lines meet is called a nexus, and all magic is stronger for miles around. Mysteria has such a nexus.

The three levels for any type of magic are: basic, intermediate, and advanced.



Familiars

Lifespan: Immortal, for as long as they act as familiars.

Description: These creatures feel compelled to form a symbiotic bond with witches, and assist them. As with any partnership, there can be both advantages and drawbacks for both sides.

Abilities:

Shape Changing - Like Skinwalkers, Familiars are capable of taking on multiple animal forms, however, unlike Skinwalkers, the amount of animal forms a Familiar can take on is limited to 3, and only the initial animal form comes to them naturally. Additional forms must be worked hard at to achieve, taking a great deal of focus and skill. Typically their animal forms tend to be domestic or at least urban in nature - animals a human might interact with or keep as a pet. In addition to their human form, one mammal form, one flying form (bird or bat), and one reptilian or amphibian form. In order to learn a new animal form, the familiar must spend time with the animal they're trying to take on the form of. For this reason, Familiars rarely take on the form of more exotic and dangerous animals.

Enhanced Physical Senses - When they are in animal form, they have the senses of the animal they have taken the form of. In human form, their senses default to the human variety, however, with effort, a more adept Familiar can call on individual animal senses without transforming. Less adept familiars may provoke a change or partial change when attempting this. (for instance, a less adept familiar calling on feline eyesight might end up transforming into a cat, or at least getting reflective elliptical pupils like a cat)

Magic Sense - Can innately sense practitioners of magic and the level of their ability.

Witch Bond - The familiar seeks out a witch (or group of witches) of like-mind to him or herself, and then edges into their life or lives. Once the Witch has accepted the Familiar into his or her life, a psychic bond is formed between them, which allows them to communicate telepathically, see through each others eyes, and feel a sympathetic echo when the other is in pain. Once formed, this bond is not easily broken, and the only time it is possible apart from through death is if both the witch and the familiar each truly wish to be free from the other. This bond also allows the familiar to focus and enhance a witches magic, or deliver it.
