Dream Walkers

A dream walker is, essentially, a human with a strange magical ability. They can walk into another’s dream, either while asleep or awake.
No one, not even a dream walker themselves, can say where the magic came from. For many it is like a recessive gene, just as blue eyes might be. Most families have no knowledge of a dream walker and thus many of them go through life, never knowing they are unique.

A dream walker’s innate power is strongest while both the dream walker and the other individual is asleep. Once inside the dream, a dream walker has the ability to manipulate, shift, or outright change an individual’s dream. Through this manipulation a dream walker can end a nightmare or cause one. The effects of the dream can sometimes manifest in the waking world, depending on the dream walker’s strength of magic and strength of will. For example: If a dream walker is strong and the individual’s dream they enter is weak then that person can be controlled through their dream to act like a sleep-walking puppet for the dream walker, or if a dream walker was to injure or kill someone in a dream, those effects could be mirrored in the real world. Not all dream walkers use their ability for evil. Some help ease an insomniac’s mind so they might get a peaceful night of sleep, or scare away bad dreams from children, or make a criminal confess their crime. A dream walker can also do nothing in a dream but interact with the individual’s own dream or watch it like a movie.

When a dream walker enters another’s dream, they leave their own bodies vulnerable, to something that might possess them, or prey on them, to even another dream walker. Performing a dream walk while awake is also extremely dangerous as it takes more of the dream walker’s physical strength to the point they have the potential to cause death from exhaustion. A dream walker has no sense of time when in another’s mind and, if they are not careful, can easily get lost in the unconsciousness and leave their own bodies to suffer from neglect and malnutrition. They can also not manipulate their own dreams. They can easily recognize that they are in a dream, but they cannot shape it to their liking. Likewise, they cannot prevent another dream walker from entering their dream, though they can travel into that other dream walker’s mind.

On rare occasions a dream walker can be summoned into a dream by a strong will, usually by a creature that is not human. The only other time a dream walker enters a dream unknowing is if someone in the world, normally people familiar with them, has a dream about the dream walker, pulling them from whatever other dream they might be in.
